From Trainee to Chartered Accountant: Jess’s Journey with Willis Cooper.

When I joined the practice as a trainee accountant nearly eight years ago, I never imagined how much I’d learn, not just about accounting, but about myself too. After completing my A Levels in Maths, Biology, and Chemistry, I decided that university wasn’t the route for me. I wanted to work, gain experience, and study alongside my job - and I’ve never looked back.

I started my training with the AAT qualification, completing Levels 2, 3, and 4 in around 18 months through home study. Having a dedicated tutor and the flexibility to study at my own pace really suited me. From there, I moved on to the ATT qualification, where I gained valuable knowledge in personal and business tax. Being skills I could immediately apply at work when helping clients with capital gains, income, and inheritance tax queries.

Next came my ACA/CTA pathway with First Intuition, which I studied at their Sheffield and Leeds centres. This was by far the toughest qualification, balancing block-release study weeks with my workload, but it was also the most rewarding. The support I received from my colleagues made all the difference — everyone pulls together here, and there’s always someone willing to lend a hand when you need it.

Throughout my training, I’ve been given plenty of opportunities to grow; from shadowing senior accountants and attending client meetings to working directly with clients myself. The structured appraisal system gives me regular space to discuss my progress, raise any concerns, and explore new learning opportunities. It’s a very proactive environment where development is genuinely encouraged.

Now, as a fully qualified accountant, I’m building my own client portfolio, working with a mix of small limited companies, sole traders, and larger clients alongside senior colleagues. Over the past seven years, I’ve successfully achieved four professional qualifications, and it has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I’m so grateful for all the guidance and encouragement I’ve had along the way, and I’m excited to continue growing with the firm.
